Order list
Tip: search a Lowe's Item # on lowes.com to go straight to the exact product ordered. Quantities assume a roof about 151″ wide (rake to rake) and about 70″ along each slope, confirmed after the test rafter pair. Lowe's stock changes quickly: if a line is unavailable, ask before substituting cedar (keep the fascia 1½″ Architectural Knotty) or the connectors.

Design
Roof assembly
3-tab shingles on ProArmor over the 19/32 sanded deck. Solid ridge with cut 3-tab caps; ventilation through two gable vents, chosen later.Framing
Fourteen KD pine rafters at 6:12, the JCS end seat with no tails, a 2×8 ridge board on RR brackets, five cedar collar ties, H2.5AZ and A35Z seats.Cedar trim
2×8 fascia with 2×4 shadow boards on all four edges. A thin black drip edge along the top; the cedar layering shows at the eaves and the rakes.Ceiling
The sanded B face shows inside. The 3/4″ shingle nails stay inside the deck, and the 3/8″ cap staples don't reach the face.Weight
About 1,160 lb of roof installed (Oct 1 takeoff; the earlier ~1,040 lb was low). The center-post dead load is about 360 lb (about 550 lb with snow). SeeStructural_Load_and_Connection_Assessment.md §11.Trade-offs accepted
About 15–20 year life and weaker wind resistance than metal. The short smooth nails are below GAF's spec, so treat the warranty as void. No inspection is involved.Roof edges and shingle details
- Deck edges end flush with where the shadow-board faces will be. Until the fascia is up, they're unsupported: keep off them.
- Shadow board flush with the fascia top (decided Sep 30; a departure from JCS p.30, which centers it on the fascia). JCS can center it because its metal roofing overhangs 2″ past the shadow board. With shingles, a centered board would sit outside the drip line and catch runoff on its flat top. So the shadow-board and fascia tops sit together, tight under the deck at the rakes; at the eaves both tops sit about 2-1/2″ above the plate, with a small wedge gap (open: raise the eave fascia about 7/8″). The deck edge is flush with the shadow face, and the drip edge folds over the shadow board's top. From below: about 1-1/4″ of black drip edge, about 2-7/8″ of shadow board, about 3-3/4″ of fascia (per the Oct 1 eave section drawing; the exact split depends on the drip edge's face height). Applies to all four edges.
- Eaves: on day 2, leave the bottom 6–8″ of ProArmor loose, folded over the deck edge. Later, unfold it, nail the drip edge to the deck edge, lay the underlayment back over the drip-edge flange and cap-staple it. Drip edge under, underlayment over.
- Rakes: drip edge goes over the underlayment. Put a Loctite dab under each shingle end, 1–2″ in from the edge.
- Starter: cut the 5″ tabs off 3-tab shingles and lay the 7″ strip along the eave, adhesive at the edge, ¼–¾″ past the drip edge. Trim 6″ off the first piece so its joints don't line up with the first course.
- Field: 6 nails per shingle at the nailing line; flush, never sunk. Shingles hang ¼–¾″ past the drip edge at the eaves and rakes.
- Ridge: 3-tab cut into 12″ caps at 5″ exposure; seal the last cap's nail heads.
- Scrap test before roofing: nail shingle scraps onto a deck offcut and check the back for tips. If tips show, stop and reassess (a 23/32 deck would be the fix).
Build sequence
Your father is helping for two days (likely mid-October, once everything has arrived). The limit is weather: the roof must be dry by the end of day 2. Status Oct 1: all 14 rafters are cut and the test pair was fitted; the ridge is cut with its RR-R brackets attached; the A35Z angles are on at the 4 corner seats. Raising is planned for Oct 2.
Current build sequence (asphalt)
- Temporary 2×4 ridge props (30-1/4″) on the inside faces of the gable plates.
- Ridge on the props.
- The 4 end rafters, with the ridge-end A35Z angles.
- Check the ridge is level and straight.
- Tack the 2×4×14 diagonal braces (ridge to floor).
- Fill the rafter pairs (RR-R at the ridge; H2.5AZ at the plate as each is set).
- Fasten the braces.
- Collar ties (5 × cedar 1×6, 7 ring nails per end).
- Deck: 19/32 sanded BCX, PSCL clips at the course seam, 3″ ring nails at 4″ (ends and gable rafters) and 6″ (intermediate rafters).
- ProArmor with the cap stapler: rakes wrapped; leave the bottom 6–8″ at the eaves loose. That's a temporary dry-in: rated for up to 90 days of sun exposure. A tarp is only a backup.
- Eave drip edge under the loose underlayment strip; rake drip edge over the underlayment.
- Gable enclosure (plywood strips and band).
- Fascia and shadow boards.
- Shingles: scrap test, starter, 6 nails per shingle, PL S30 at the rakes, ridge caps.
- Gable vents later; the temporary bracing comes out last.
Storage until the build
- Sanded plywood, rafters, ridge: flat on evenly spaced supports, dry and covered. A crawl space works only if it's truly dry, and never on bare dirt.
- Green cedar: outside, stacked with spacer sticks, tarp over the top only so air moves through.
- Shingles: flat and dry, out of direct sun, no more than about 10 bundles high.
- ProArmor, fasteners, sealant: anywhere dry; keep the sealant from baking.
Still open
Plywood: re-order the 7 sheets of 19/32 sanded BCX.Done: Home Depot delivered them Oct 2.- Eave fascia height: raise it about 7/8″ so the eave tops sit tight under the deck (both tops are now about 2-1/2″ above the plate).
- Oct 2 purchases: replacement 2×6×12 for the miscut rafter, 4 more A35Z, 1 more box of SD9112. Return the 4 extra RR-R.
- Later: gable vent model; gable plywood strips and band; wall felt (2 rolls of #30 D226 Type II from a roofing supply house, at shingling time); stainless 1¼–1½″ coil roofing nails (~1,500) for the cedar wall shingles; exterior trim finish and color.
- Optional: snug supports under the rim at the two center posts, installed before roofing (Oct 1 roof takeoff numbers: Structural assessment §11.6). Check the recorded oak-root edges first on the east side.
